Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a kid. Aunt Denise worked as a nurse who stayed overnight in order to provide her with the chance to learn about art and literature, or even theater. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's examples of the power of art as an effective vehicle for social activism. In the same way, her mother was socially conscious and taught her to say something through the arts. While DuVernay grew up living in Compton with her family, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the summers she spent in Alabama to help inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college at the time she began to become attracted to the field of production for television journalism. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given an assignment to watch the residence and scrutinizing the trash of one of members of the juries. She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in small production studios right out of school. In this role, she launched her own PR company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
